SHIROYAMA HOTEL kagoshima stands 108 metres above the city on the wooded slopes of Shiroyama. Sakurajima rises across Kinko Bay, while central Kagoshima spreads below. The volcano appears from the open-air hot spring, selected guestrooms and several dining rooms, each at a different hour and angle.
The hotel opened in 1963 as the 63-room Shiroyama Kanko Hotel. A new wing followed in 1974, the present name was adopted in 2018, and club rooms and other renovated accommodation opened in 2020. Today the property has 355 rooms. Its official company history records how a small hilltop hotel grew into one of Kagoshima’s largest places to stay.
The hillside address is removed from the busiest streets around Tenmonkan. It is still practical for an evening in the city, but the hot spring and broad choice of restaurants also make it easy to spend the night entirely at the hotel.
Between Shiroyama’s forest and Sakurajima
Sakurajima lies to the east of the hotel; Shiroyama’s dense greenery rises on the other side. Volcano, bay, city and forest share the same outlook, a rare combination for a hotel this close to a prefectural capital.
Shiroyama was the final battleground of the Satsuma Rebellion and is protected as both a national historic site and a natural monument. According to Kagoshima City’s official visitor guide, more than 600 plant species grow along its nature trail, including camphor trees estimated to be about 400 years old.
A walk through the trees before taking the shuttle into town reveals more of the setting than the familiar silhouette of Sakurajima alone. From the hill, the streets, shoreline and bay show how closely the city sits beside the volcano.
Choosing a room with Sakurajima in the window
Room category matters here. The 355 rooms are divided among Sakurajima view, forest view and no-view options, so the volcano is not visible from every room. Check the view description as well as the room name before booking.
The standard Sakurajima View Twin measures 27 square metres. At the same size, the Comfort Sakurajima View Twin adds a floor-to-ceiling window and interiors influenced by Kagoshima’s colours and traditional craftwork.
For more space, the 53-square-metre Premium Twin occupies floors 6 to 10 and faces Sakurajima. These rooms were renovated in 2022 as the Sakurajima View Premium Floor.
The 50-square-metre Club Twin looks towards the forest instead. Its benefits include access to the club lounge during café and cocktail hours, priority check-in and late checkout until noon. It trades the volcano view for more space and lounge privileges.
With so many categories, the most reliable approach is to compare the view, floor, size and occupancy shown for each room on the official room list.
Morning light over Satsuma-no-Yu
On the third floor, the Satsuma-no-Yu open-air bath faces Sakurajima and central Kagoshima. Its bicarbonate spring water rises from 1,000 metres underground, and both the men’s and women’s bathing areas include indoor and outdoor baths.
Morning hours begin at 5:30 from April through September and at 6:00 from October through March. On a clear day, the light appears behind Sakurajima and moves across the bay and city. Use of the main bath is included for hotel guests.
The bath closes for cleaning from 11:00 to 13:00, then reopens until midnight, with final admission at 23:30. Seasonal hours and temporary closures should be checked on the official Satsuma-no-Yu page shortly before arrival.
The private hot spring is a separate facility with a free-flowing bath and open terrace. It costs extra and requires advance booking.
Kagoshima black pork, wagyu and fish from Kinko Bay
Meals can range from kaiseki, sushi and tempura to teppanyaki, French, Italian and Chinese cooking, with bars and lounges for drinks afterwards.
At Shiroyama Gardens Suiren, menus draw on Kagoshima black pork, wagyu, fish from Kinko Bay, satsuma-age fish cakes and local dishes such as tonkotsu braised pork. The selection changes with the season, so checking the current menu before reserving is worthwhile.
Le Ciel, the French restaurant on the top floor, overlooks the city and Kinko Bay. A table around sunset exchanges the daytime outline of Sakurajima for the lights of central Kagoshima.
The hotel also produces Shiroyama Brewery craft beer, satsuma-age, bread and sweets. Opening days and menus vary by venue and are listed on the official restaurant page.
Breakfast plans generally use a buffet of about 80 Japanese and Western dishes featuring Kagoshima ingredients. The venue or serving style can differ for some packages and club-room stays, so check the details attached to the room rate.
The free shuttle between the hill and the city
By car, the hotel is about ten minutes from Kagoshima-Chuo Station. For the free shuttle, allow about five minutes to walk from the station gates to Kagoshima Chuo Terminal and roughly 25 minutes from the terminal to the hotel.
The shuttle also serves the Tenmonkan area. It makes dinner and shopping downtown practical, although repeated trips on foot are less appealing because of the steep hillside. The latest stops and timetable are published on the official access page.
Drivers have access to a car park with 780 spaces. Parking is charged for overnight guests, and the fee structure differs between the first night and subsequent nights.
A night planned around Sakurajima
The same view is not guaranteed in every room, bath and restaurant. One satisfying sequence is to reserve a Sakurajima-facing room, visit Satsuma-no-Yu early in the morning, then dine above the city as its lights appear.
Forest-facing club rooms and no-view rooms offer different balances of space, lounge access and price. Decide where the volcano matters most—at the bedroom window, from the bath, or over a meal—then compare the room and dining options on that basis.
The scale of the hotel reflects more than six decades of expansion, but its most memorable details come directly from the hill: the forest behind the building, the city below, the volcanic spring water and Sakurajima across the bay.
